چکیده

A layer structure consisting of two glass plates bonded with polymer-based adhesives and loaded at the upper surface with a linewedge indenter is used to evaluate crack containment. Two adhesives are used, a low-modulus epoxy resin and a particle-filled composite. The adhesives arrest indentation-induced transverse cracks at the first interface. A substantially higher load is required to resume propagation beyond the second interface in the second glass layer. Delamination is not a principal failure mode. Nor is the operative mode of failure one of continuous crack penetration through the adhesive, but rather reinitiation of a secondary crack in the glass ahead of the arrested primary crack. A fracture mechanics analysis, in conjunction with finite element modeling, is presented to account for the essential elements of crack inhibition, and to identify critical material and layer thickness variables. It is confirmed that adhesives with lower modulus and higher thickness are most effective as crack arresters. Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of Acta Materialia Inc.

Crack propagation across an adhesive interlayer in flexural loading

Crack propagation across interlayers separating adjoining brittle plates in flexure was studied using a model glass/epoxy/glass system. A transverse starter crack in the center glass plate was made to propagate to the nearest epoxy interface, where it arrested. System failure occurred at some higher load by crack reinitiation from pre-existing flaws in the adjoining glass surface, not by contin...

Cracking in brittle laminates from concentrated loads

A study is made of the crack resistance of multilaminates consisting of brittle layers interleaved with compliant interlayers and bonded to compliant substrates. Specific attention is paid to flexure-generated radial cracks in the undersurfaces of individual glass layers from concentrated loads applied at the top surfaces. A proposed condition for acceptance of such multilayer systems is that r...

Transverse fracture in multilayers from tension and line-wedge indentation

Crack propagation across laminated brittle solids from uniaxial tension or line-wedge loading is studied in real time using a model glass/epoxy architecture. The fracture progresses from one layer to the next via reinitiation from pre-existing flaws on the glass surfaces ahead of the primary crack in a process accompanied by some penetration through the interlayer but generally little or no del...

Interaction of dynamic mode-I cracks with inclined interfaces

In this paper, we report on an experimental study of the deflection/penetration behavior of dynamic mode-I cracks propagating at two different crack velocities (slower and faster) toward inclined weak interfaces of three dissimilar angles (a): 30 , 45 and 60 . A simple wedge-loading specimen configuration as proposed by Xu et al. [Xu LR, Huang YY, Rosakis AJ. Dynamic crack deflection and penetr...

The roles of toughness and cohesive strength on crack deflection at interfaces

In order to design composites and laminated materials, it is necessary to understand the issues that govern crack deflection and crack penetration at interfaces. Historically, models of crack deflection have been developed using either a strength-based or an energy-based fracture criterion. However, in general, crack propagation depends on both strength and toughness. Therefore, in this paper, ...
